Typhoon Haiyan, known locally as Yolanda, hit the Philippines on Friday 8 November, causing catastrophic damage. The 300-mile wide typhoon is estimated to have killed at least 10,000 people in the central Philippines, destroying about 70 to 80 percent of the area in its path, with huge waves sweeping away entire coastal villages in the Leyte Province and devastating the region’s capital, Tacloban. The city and nearby villages were flooded, leaving floating bodies and roads choked with debris from fallen trees, tangled power lines and flattened homes.
618,175 people are currently displaced and approximately 9.5 million have been affected in 36 provinces, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
World Jewish Relief is appealing to save lives and urgently support those affected with emergency food and water, temporary shelter and the provision of medical assistance. WJR works only with partners who are fully accountable and who can conclusively guarantee the security of funds raised.
